I loved your Noriko cosplay at A-kon! I wish I had a chance to stop and talk more. What other older or obscure series do you enjoy? Anything you recommend?
So I started writing this like TWO YEARS AGO when I got this ask and then it languished in my drafts forever so uhhh…sorry
But anyways…
Oh mannnn, I love obscure series because I am a HUGE ANIME HIPSTER
So uhhh…
Giant Robo- a 7 movie series about the valiant Experts of Justice fighting the terrorist organization BIG FIRE and their apocalyptic plans. Gorgeously animated with a great classic feel.
Now and Then, Here and There- A boy Shu gets transported to an awful future helldesert worldand has to survive (warning: a lot of fucked up stuff in here)
Kaiba- A sci-fi world where memories can be saved to chips and transferred between bodies. The main character wakes up with no memories and a hole in his chest, and goes on a quest to find his past. Great artstyle and emotional impact
Dennou Coil- Google Glass The Anime– a group of kids with AR glasses that allow them to see the digital parts of their town try to solve a mystery about the hidden and deleted worlds therein.
Eve no Jikan- Anime Asmovian robots– two teens keep ending up in a cafe where the social restrictions between humans and robots are relaxed. Really great emotional impact also.
Golden Boy- okay this one is pretty well known, but it’s a great classic ecchi about the MC cycling around Japan being a jack of all trades and helping out sexy ladies.
Haibane Renmei- an enigmatic, mysterious show about a group of “haibane“–grey wings– who wake up with no memories in a walled city they are not allowed to leave. Atmospheric as heck and fun to try to puzzle out.
Usagi Drop- a light sweet show about a single man raising his orphaned relative (you may have heard bad things about the manga but don’t worry, this has a different ending thank god)
Jellyfish Princess- also kinda better known. A fashionable crossdresser becomes involved with a house of otaku NEET girls. Sweet and also very funny.
Fantastic Children- This is kind of cheating because I haven’t finished it yet, but a nice fairy tale styled show about a group of mysterious immortal children and their quest for…something (I haven’t gotten to that yet DX )
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0- a middle school girl and her younger brother try to get back home after being stranded by a giant earthquake.
Angel’s Egg (film) - the artsiest on this list: surreal, symbolic, and melancholic with very little dialogue. A girl in an abandoned city full of shadows, protecting a mysterious egg. Available on YouTube because it never got licensed, but torrent might have better quality: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIhKqaNp4Dc
Planetes- also cheating because this is widely recommended, but this is one of the best constructed, thematically cohesive shows I’ve ever seen. About space garbage collectors gathering debris that impedes space travel (grows further from that point).
RahXephon- my NUMBER ONE favorite anime (that no one knows about :C ). Mecha, Mayan mythology, and music. Mysterious and fun to try to puzzle out, great sound and mech design, and almost every character gets development and can be empathized with. If you liked Eva you’ll probably like it; if you dislike Eva for the reasons I did (re: character development and motivation, symbolic and mythological cohesiveness, plot progression) you’ll probably really like it.
